It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Helmer Nils Berglund at the age of 81.
Helmer passed away Monday, June 3, 2013, with his family by his side, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in Thunder Bay, Ont.
He was born in Keewatin, Ont. but later moved to Fort Frances, Ont., where he was raised and was one of four children.
Helmer attended school in Fort Frances and later went on to be employed in the bush camps. As time went on, he mastered the art of diesel-driven machinery.
Helmer had become a well-respected heavy-equipment operator, and in November, 2012 he received his 40-year pin in recognition from the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793.
In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering in his garage and spending time with family and friends talking about the “good old days.”
Helmer was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
Helmer is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 55 years, Catherine (nee Vellieux); sons, Brian Berglund and Neil Berglund; daughter, LeeAnne Berglund (Tyler Woods); grandchildren, Kyle, Steven, and Matthew; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Gunner Berglund, and mother, Gertrude Berglund; brother, David; and sisters, Gladys and Shelia.
Cremation has taken place and a family gathering will be held as a celebration of life, as per his wishes.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario are greatly appreciated.
