Helen DeBenedet, 81, of 834 Second St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2007 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
Helen was born April 13, 1926 in Fort Frances to the late Michael (Mike) and Anne Homeniuk. She attended school and lived most of her life in Fort Frances.
During World War II, she moved to Ottawa, Ont. While there, she worked in records for War Services. She later returned to Fort Frances, where she worked at Wells Hardware for a short time.
En route by train from Ottawa back to Fort Frances, she had met the love of her life, Claude DeBenedet, to whom she was united in marriage on Feb. 4, 1946.
Raising her family was the most important part of her life. Helen also loved gardening, cooking, and camping with her family. Most of all, she enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren.
Helen was a member of the Italian Ladies Benevolant Club, La Verendrye General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, St. Mary’s Church, and the C.W.L.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Helen is survived by her husband, Claude DeBenedet, of Fort Frances, Ont.; one son, Donald DeBenedet, wife, Dianne, and their daughter, Dayna; and two daughters, Janice, husband, Wayne Maxwell, and their children, Andrea and Brad and Teresa, husband, Jack McFayden, and their children, Scott and Michelle, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; and special family member, Amy Wreggitt of Fort Frances, Ont.
Also surviving are two sisters, Kay Tones of Sudbury, Ont. Jennie and husband, Warren Hemstad, of Bemidji, Mn.; two sisters-in-law, Rose and husband, Ken Dickson, of Dryden, Ont. and Hilda Homeniuk of Mississauga, Ont.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by one son, Claude Michael DeBenedet Jr. in 1973; one brother, John Homeniuk; and four sisters, Mary Moreau, Rose O’Leary, Sophie White, and Victoria Peters.
Cremation will take place at the Rainy River Cremation Services in International Falls, Mn.
A memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances, with Father Francis Pudicherry officiating.
Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances.
The honourary pallbearers will be Amy Wreggitt, Jane McLeod, Mavis Dick, Lil Pihulak, Pearl DeGagne, and Paulette Fafard.
