Grace M. Proteau, 88, of Rainy River, Ont., passed away Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. with her family by her side.
Grace was born Dec. 6, 1921 in Blue Township, Ont. to the late August and Lilah Johnson. She attended Pratt-Blue #4 School and Rainy River High School.
Grace loved to knit, crochet, liquid embroidery, and sew. She made many beautiful quilts for the family.
Grace always looked forward to joining the women at the bakery for coffee. She also was member of the Rainy River seniors’ drop-in centre.
She took great pride in doing things with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Grace is survived by her children, Gail Jonassen (Wayne McCarthy) of Rainy River, Ont. and Ronald (Patricia) Meunier of Thunder Bay, Ont.; grandchildren, John (Sara), Lorne (Tonja), Bradley (Aime), and David (Carol); and great-grandchildren, Brock, Kelsey, Jarred, Rian, Kodi, Hunter, and Ashton.
Grace also is survived by her sisters, Ruth Rogoza and Shirley (Roy) Gadd, and brother, Roy (Joselyn) Johnson; sister-in-law, Ilene Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Don Bolen.
Grace was predeceased by her parents, August and Lilah; husbands, Adelard Meunier and Edward Proteau; brothers, Wesley (Dulcie), Wilfred (Jean), and Charles Johnson; sister-in-law, Shirley Johnson; son-in-law, Edwin Jonassen; and brother-in-law, Matt Rogoza.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009 at 1 p.m. from Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Rainy River, Ont., with Fr. Alan Albao celebrant.
Interment took place in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River.
The pallbearers were John Jonassen, Lorne Jonassen, Bradley Meunier, David Meunier, Walter Rogoza, and John Johnson.
The honourary pallbearers were Margaret Livingstone, Vivian Hartnell, Mary Desorcy, Betty Blight, Darleen Armstrong, and Audrey Paulson.
Ushers were David and Ken Rogoza.
