It is with many fond memories that we say goodbye to our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Glenn Eklund.
Glenn, 70, of Thunder Bay, Ont., passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospice on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009 with his loving family at his side.
Glenn was born in the Nestor Falls, Ont. area and lived there until moving to Thunder Bay to attend Lakehead University. After graduating with a diploma in forestry management, Glenn went to work for the Ministry of Natural Resources as a conservation officer.
After brief stints in Timmins and Nestor Falls, he and his family settled in Atikokan, Ont., where they spent the next 15 years.
In 1984, Glenn and his wife, Lorraine, purchased Canadian Haven fishing resort in Nestor Falls, which they ran until retirement in 1997.
Glenn was a wise, compassionate, and patient man who took the greatest pleasures from the simple things in life. He had many interests, most of which involved his family. He coached his children’s curling and hockey teams, and loved fishing, woodworking, playing cards, reading, and travelling.
Glenn also loved spending time outdoors, and he had an unusual ability to befriend animals (except cats).
Married for 49 years, Glenn will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend, Lorraine (nee Allan); daughter, Melanie Tribe (Gord); and sons, Grant (Phuong Hoang) and Shawn.
Also surviving are his grandsons, Philip and Richard Tribe; granddaughter, Amanda Eklund; and sister, Karen Perreault (Frank) of Sioux Lookout, Ont., and their children, Dan and Ryan.
Glenn was predeceased by his father, Rudy, and mother, Vernice.
It was Glenn’s request that no formal funeral or memorial service take place. Instead, there will be a casual open house on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 from noon-2 p.m. at the United Church in Nestor Falls.
A second open house will occur Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. at Pioneer Village in Thunder Bay (Highway 61). These open houses will be an opportunity for friends and relatives to visit with Glenn’s family and share stories from the past.
As well, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations be made to Glenn’s favourite charity, Shelter House Thunder Bay, or to another food bank in your area.
