GLADYS VIOLET BRIGGS

Our mother, Gladys Violet Briggs (neé Penoff), passed away on the evening of Monday, July 26, 2010, with family by her side, at her home at Stensrud Lodge after a long journey with Alzheimer’s.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Pauline Penoff; sister, Dorothy Francis; and husband, Ben.
Gladys leaves to celebrate her life her children, Corinne (Wilf) Weber, Gary (Geri) Briggs, Doug (Cathie) Briggs, Paula (Dave) Morch, and Lori (Gerard) Tetzlaff; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives and friends.
Born in Winnipeg, Man. on Jan. 6, 1927, Gladys attended St. Joseph`s Academy, followed by business school in Ottawa, Ont. Upon graduation, she worked for the Department of Defence doing her part to contribute to the war effort.
She met the love of her life, Ben Briggs, in Pinewood, Ont. Married on July 10, 1946 in Kenora, Ont., their married life spanned Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, settling in Saskatoon in 1964.
Gladys devoted herself to being a full-time Mom until the untimely death of Ben at the early age of 50. Gladys then added paid work to her full life of family, friends, community service, and political involvement.
Bridge, bowling, and gardening were her favourite pastimes. Friends and family also were central to Glady`s life. Nothing gave her more joy than when the house was full, all were home, and friends came to call.
The Briggs home was a place of love and laughter, making it a meeting place for family and friends.
Gladys established close long-term relationships with her brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry Francis, Jean (Bob) Cleland, and Kathy (Max) Evans. Across the alley, neighbours Mel and Jake Froese were special friends over a period of 42 years.
Funeral services and reception will take place Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Westwood Funeral Chapel, 1402 20th St., in Saskatoon.
