GERALD WAYNE HOFFMAN

It is with great sadness that the family of Gerald Hoffman announces his passing on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, in Toronto, Ontario.

Gerry was born on April 12, 1941, in Fort Frances to Kenneth and Hilda Hoffman. He grew up in Fort Frances and after finishing high school he worked as a radio operator at Nym Lake. He then moved on to Moosonee where he worked for several years, enjoying all the experiences of the North. He returned home to Fort Frances, working at the family business, Sanitary Dry Cleaners for many years. When his parents decided to close the business and sell the building to McTaggarts, he stayed put. He joined the McTaggart’s staff, working in the warehouse until retirement.

He enjoyed living at Windy Point for over 40 years, with good neighbours and friends to keep him company. Curling and snowmobiling were popular winter sports, plus he was an avid hunter and fisherman. In retirement, he exchanged the cold Canadian winters for the hot Texas sun, making new friends in Rio Hondo. His favourite activities while there were shooting pool and playing Texas Hold’Em. Despite his challenges, there wasn’t much he couldn’t master on his own. After he met Susan Marshall in 1998, they were inseparable until her passing in 2016. Together, they enjoyed pontoon boat rides on a beautiful day, hosting dinner parties, raising ducks, listening to the resident loons, and watching newly hatched turtles make their way to the water. He became involved with the Watten Fire Department and served as Fire Chief for many years. He started their annual fish fry in 1996 and helped with many flea markets. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and enjoyed the camaraderie.

He will be greatly missed by his sisters Carol and husband Ray Bujold and Linda and husband Robin Reed; nieces and nephews Angela (Reece) Mitchelson, Jennifer (Darcy) Brown, Mark (Molly) Bujold, Christopher (Melanie) Reed and Heather Reed (Shannon Penney); great-nieces and nephews Roen, Garon and Briar Mitchelson, Jillian and Carter Brown, Benjamin and Evelyn Bujold, Emily and Brady Penney, Trenton and Blake Reed; Susan’s daughter Kate and Nathan Baird; granddaughter Sloan; the Marshall family; as well as numerous cousins.

Cremation has taken place. A come and go celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Clubroom.
