It is with great sadness that the family of “Joey” Ossachuk, 84, of 707 Victoria Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., announces his passing on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
Joey was born Sept. 9, 1924 in Fort Frances to the late William and Mary Ossachuk. During World War II, Joey enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy and served with the Canadian Coastal Command in the Atlantic.
Following his discharge from the services, he returned home. On June 27, 1951, he was united in marriage to the former “Bertha” Fournier, and together they raised their three children.
Joey worked at the mill in Fort Frances as a rigger in various departments until his retirement on Jan. 29, 1986 following 43 years of service.
Joey was a talented musician, and played drums and sang for many orchestras and bands throughout his life. He was a very kind-hearted man and a friend to all people that he met. He always made you feel good about yourself with his stories and jokes with a grin from ear to ear.
Joey will be dearly missed by his family, fellow musicians of all ages, former co-workers, and friends alike.
He was predeceased by one brother, John Ossachuk; one sister, Lena Duchnicki; one daughter-in-law, Elaine Ossachuk; and one brother-in-law, Mike Kowalchuk.
Joey leaves behind to mourn his wife, Bertha Ossachuk of Fort Frances, Ont.; three children, Jack and Kelly of Kelowna, B.C., Patti and husband, John Johnson, of Fort Frances, Ont., and Cookie and John Herbert of Red Deer, Alta; grandchildren, Justin and Nikki Ossachuk, Jordan Ossachuk, Jodi and Jason Easton, Sandi Johnson and Gerry Brown, Trent Herbert, and Teri and Trent Hunter; and great-grandchildren, Ryley and Shae Herbert, Madison Hunter, MacKenzie and Ty Ossachuk, Sayler Easton, and Adam and Jacob Betts.
He also is survived by two sisters, Edith Dolyny and Sadie Kowalchuk, and one brother-in-law, John Duchnicki, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Joey’s life will be held Friday, April 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Rev. Mr. Bob Grynol officiating.
The Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 Colour Party will provide their military tribute at the service.
Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
The honourary pallbearers will be Joey’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
