George Stacy Stang, 69, of rural Stratton, Ont., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999 at the Port Arthur General Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ont. after a brief illness.
He was born March 11, 1930 in Sifton Township to Bill and Myrtle Stang. On Oct. 15, 1956, George was united in marriage to Grace Turner and together they made their home in Dewart Township north of Stratton, where they farmed side by side and raised five children.
George spent his life logging in the area with his stepfather, Clifford Berg, and his brothers, and was employed for several years by Emo Forest Products. He had a great appreciation of horses, having used them in earlier years both in the bush and on his farm.
An avid hunter all his life, George also had taken a keen interest in fishing since he retired from logging in 1991. He and Grace spent many hours doing wood crafts, as well.
George was very devoted to his family and his grandchildren, and always made sure they were included in all the activities he enjoyed.
Surviving him are his wife, Grace, of 43 years; and his five children and their families, Marilyn and husband, Dave Wrolstad (Stacey, Angela, and Scott), and Carolyn and husband, Paul Jewett (Paula and Jason), all of Dryden, Ont., Clayton Stang and special friend, Michelle (Damien, Tyler, and Brandon) of Fort Frances, Ont., and Donna and husband, Bud McQuaker (Matthew and Jared), and Barb and husband, George Heyens (Camille, Colin, and Chantel), all of Stratton, Ont.
Also surviving are two sisters, Katherine Neilson and Edith Haw (Bradley), all of Stratton, Ont.; and three brothers, William Stang (Evelyn) of Pinewood, and Wilmer Stang (Marjorie) and Dale Berg (Shirley), all of Stratton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceasing George were his parents, Bill Stang and Myrtle Berg; and stepfather, Clifford Berg.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 26, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of the Way Church in Pinewood, Ont. Rev. Pat White officiated, with music provided by Jodie Allan and Beth Brown accompanied by Erin Pollard.
Interment took place in Pineridge Cemetery in North Branch.
Pallbearers were George’s nephews, Steven Stang, Dwight Stang, Keith Haw, Ken Haw, Curtis Berg, Lionel Berg, and grandsons, Colin Heyens, Jason Jewett, and Tyler Christiansen.
