It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of George Whitefield on March 20, 2001.
George was born Jan. 13, 1922 in Fort Frances, Ont. to the late Reginald and Jemima Whitefield. He was united in marriage to Lottie Edberg on Feb. 21, 1947.
George was predeceased by one daughter, Georgina; his parents; one brother, Reginald Whitefield; one sister, Dolly Durbin; and one infant sister, Georgina.
He leaves behind his wife, Lottie, and nine children, Janise (Rena) Whitefield, MayAnn Skirten, Marie Tierney, and Laverne Whitefield, all of Thunder Bay, Ont., and June (Rick) Whalen, Neil (Shirley) Whitefield, Karen (Dave) Chowhan, Terry Whitefield, and Brian Whitefield, all of Fort Frances, Ont.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, Tina Gorsy, Jason, Sheldon and Sherry Skirten, Stephen and Nicole Tierney, Danielle Whitefield, Mike and Carrie-Lynn Kellar, Jennifer, Nina, Jade, and Bailey Whitefield, and Mallory and Corey Chowhan; and four great-grandchildren, Spencer Gorsy, Colten Skirten, Brett Bergner, and Talyssa Kellar.
He also leaves to mourn two sisters, Isabelle Busch and Olive Fagerdahl; two sisters-in-law, Millie Whitefield and Elna Peterson; one brother-in-law, Sam Durbin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In 1942, George joined the Canadian Armed Forces, serving with the Royal Canadian Engineer in Great Britain and Europe. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
He retired from the paper mill in 1986 with 46 years of service.
George was well-liked, and always had a smile and a wave for those who passed by. He enjoyed listening to old-time music, playing cards, and playing Bingo. He especially enjoyed when he and Lottie would go to the Emo Legion for the Saturday night dances.
Dad was always a great teaser. He loved playing with his grandchildren and working around the yard.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 21, 2001 from 7-8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 22, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home.
