GEORGE EDMUND MUDGE

George Edmund Mudge, 67, of 1032 Victoria Ave. N., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000.
George was born Oct. 18, 1933 in La Vallee, Ont. He worked as a police officer for 28 years with the Fort Frances Police Department until his retirement in 1990. He also worked at various other jobs, including scaling with the Forestry at Quetico Park, and helping to resurface the Crilly Dam, Kettle Falls Dam, and the Calm Lake Dam.
He also worked in the mines in Thompson, Man. He guided on Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods, and worked as a fireman/brakeman on a steam engine with the C.N.R.
From 1950 to 1954, he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as an airframe technician, specializing in hydraulics. He also did an inspection of the Avro Arrow, also known as the Golden Arrow.
He was very proud of a movie Dan Akroyd made about the “Golden Arrow,” in which George’s daughter, Lisa, appeared.
He also had worked with NATO during the Hungarian Revolution in which he airlifted refugees out of Hungary.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was very proud of his flower, vegetable, and rock gardens. He was a volunteer at the Tuck Shop at Rainycrest.
George loved poetry and had a gift for reciting poems. He travelled around the world twice and was classified as a shellback.
He was an elected lifetime member of the Eastern Star #80. He also played hockey in his earlier years, and had worked as a cook at a lumber camp.
George was united in marriage Oct. 9, 1960 to his wife Joan, who survives along with daughter, Lisa Johnston, and her son, Erin, of Winnipeg, and son Guy, and wife Judy, and their daughter, Ashley, of Fort Frances.
Also surviving are four sisters, Shirley (Lyman) Adams of P.E.I., Helen (Robert) Hellar of San Francisco, Phyllis (Dale) Callaghan of Thunder Bay, and Virginia (Ted) Munch of Whitecourt, Alta.; brother, Wesley Mudge of Calgary; uncle, Tom Anderson of Fort Frances; mother-in-law, Hilda Cotton of Fort Frances; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edmund and Katherine Mudge.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Rev. Diane Clifford officiating.
An Order of the Eastern Star #80 Memorial Service was held prior to the funeral service.
Interment took place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Honourary pallbearers were members of the Fort Frances Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.
