On March 10, 2007, a beautiful spring day, Gary Kitzul left the arms of his loving wife, Heather, and went into the arms of the Lord. It happened suddenly at Reef Point—the place he loved best in this world.
Gary was born to Daniel and Margaret Kitzul on Jan. 18, 1950 in Fort Frances, Ont. After finishing high school here, he began a career at Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc. in the accounting and finance department.
He worked his way up to chief accountant, where his attention to detail was legendary, and started the hospital on the road to computerization. Thereafter, he was responsible for computer systems services.
He worked there for 26 years until ill health forced him to take an early retirement in 1996.
He met the love of his life and best friend, Heather Halliday, when she started working at the hospital laboratory in 1975. They were married July 23, 1977.
Gary battled juvenile diabetes for most of his life. This disease imposed many restrictions on him, which he faced with courage, perseverance, and faith in God.
Gary was a car enthusiast, so it was a banner day for him when he got his blue Corvette in the early 1970s. He shared his love of cars with his brother, Terry, and together they enjoyed attending Grand Prix races and auto shows whenever they could.
After his retirement, he was introduced to the sport of fishing by his good friend, Tom Booth, and spent many happy hours with him on the lake. As well, he always looked forward to the yearly family reunions at Reef Point.
He had a quick wit and enjoyed getting the upper hand of unsuspecting friends with his puns and goofy jokes.
He was predeceased by his father, Daniel Kitzul, on April 27, 1993.
He is survived by his loving wife, Heather; mother, Margaret Kitzul; brothers, Dennis (Gail) of Fort Frances, Ont., Dr. Bob (Renate) of Waterloo, Ont., and Terry of Toronto, Ont.; sister, Marianne of Vancouver, B.C.; niece, Cheryl Williams (David, Eric, and Scott) of Atikokan, Ont.; nephew, Richard Kitzul of Atikokan, Ont.; and sister-in-law, Katherine Scott (John, Erin, Ashley, and Ryan) of St. John’s, Nfld.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 10 a.m. at New Beginnings Fellowship on Mill Road in Fort Frances. Rev. Stephen Laing and Rev. Dean Patrow will officiate.
Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances with family members only.
Pallbearers will be Richard Kitzul, Tom Booth, Dan Tausendefrende, Walter Rogoza, Edward Enge, and Richard Bruyere.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Dialysis Unit of Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc., 110 Victoria Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 1B7.
Gary has entered into a well-deserved rest and is freed from a body that imposed severe limitations on him. Until we meet again, Gary. Enjoy fishing in the River of Life.
