In loving memory of Garnet James Froome, 76, of Fort Frances, Ont., who went peacefully to be with his Lord and Saviour on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Garnet was born in Bergland, Ont. on Sept. 1, 1933. He was the third eldest of six children born to James and Edith Froome.
When he was a child, the family moved to Thunder Bay, Ont. He often talked fondly of his first job delivering telegrams on a small motorized two-wheeled bike.
They moved back to Rainy River District, where he helped his father run the Co-op Store in Stratton, Ont. Garnet then drove the cream truck for Rainy River Co-op.
His proudest accomplishment was working on construction to build the Noden Causeway from start to finish. Garnet also worked at the mine in Atikokan, the Sapawe sawmill, and in the bush cutting pulpwood.
He loved nature and the outdoors.
In his retirement, Garnet spent several weeks every summer camping out near the rapids in Bergland at the location of the homestead cabin he was born in. He called it his place of peace.
Garnet survived the many challenges in his life through his faith in God, prayer, and his love for his family. He will be deeply missed.
Garnet was predeceased by his parents, James and Edith Froome; sister, Loraine Fell; and brothers-in-law, Joe Fell, Max Faulkner, and Wayne Anness.
He is survived by his siblings, Louise Falkner of Taber, Alta., Merle (Frank) Penney of Lethbridge, Alta., Evelyn (Arnie) Kleppe of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Dale (Audrey) Froome of Dryden, Ont..
Also surviving are his children, Diane Froome (Claude) of Winnipeg, Man., Rick (Shirley) Froome of Dryden Ont., Valerie (Doug) Nelson of Rainy River, Ont., Lorraine Giberson (Billy) of Rainy River, Ont., Arlene “Peanut” (Darren) Holmes of Winnipeg, Man., Cheryl Froome (Neil) of Dryden, Ont., and Duane Froome (Sherry) of Winnipeg, Man.; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Garnet’s life will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Bergland Hall.
Interment to take place in Bergland Cemetery.
