FREDERICK GEORGE WILLIAMS

Frederick George “Fred” Williams, 80, of 551 Riverview Dr., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Monday, April 13, 1998 at La Verendrye General Hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1917 in Liverpool, England to the late James and Margaret Williams.
Mr. Williams immigrated to Canada at the age of five with his parents and settled at Rocky Inlet. He later moved to Fort Frances, where he lived until now.
On Aug. 17, 1937 at the age of 16, he began working for the Ontario-Minnesota Paper Mill and then Boise Cascade Canada. He worked as a labourer, then moved to accounting and later became mill manager. On Aug. 11, 1958, he became a director and later served as chairman of the board from Sept. 28, 1973 to May 20, 1981.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served overseas as a captain with the Royal Canadian Artillery. He received numerous medals, including the Military Cross, and received an honourable discharge in 1945.
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 in Fort Frances, and also was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.
Fred was an avid outdoorsman who loved the lakes, fishing, and hunting. He was a Ham Radio Operator and in his younger years he held a pilot’s licence. He was a dedicated family man, and his love and generosity will never be forgotten.
Fred was united in marriage Nov. 9, 1940 to the former Lillian Roseatta Bahr, who predeceased him Sept. 29, 1996. He also was predeceased by an infant daughter, Nan, in 1947; and a brother, James.
He is survived by his two daughters, Carol and husband, Metro Wowchuk, of Fort Frances, Ont., and Susan and husband, George Flint, of Prince Frederick, Md.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Gerry Stratton of Fort Frances, Ont., Sue-Ann Wowchuk of Burnaby, B.C., and Tara Wowchuk of Fort Frances, Ont.; a sister, Margaret Tierney of Willowdale, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 16, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Father Lawrence Conlon O.M.I. will officiate, with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.
