FREDERICK (FRED) M. McKELVIE

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Fred M. McKelvie, 75, on Sunday, April 12, 2009 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Fred was born Sept. 12, 1933 in Fort Frances, Ont. to the late Albert “Mac” and Doris McKelvie.
Upon graduation, Fred worked for Mando as a camp clerk until 1952, then went to work in the local mill. In 1956, Fred purchased the upholstery shop in Fort Frances and began the trade of upholster and rug installation.
On Sept. 15, 1956, Fred was united in marriage to Connie Howells and together they raised four children. Fred, Connie, and family then moved to Dryden, Ont. in the fall of 1967, where Fred worked for R.A. Gill Ltd. at their Husky bulk plant.
In 1972, Fred returned to his old trade doing upholstery and rug installation.
In the spring of 1989, Fred and Connie moved back to Fort Frances and built their home on McKelvie Island (Rainy Lake) until 2000 when, because of ill health, they bought their home in Fort Frances to spend the winter months and returned to the island for just the summer.
On Sept. 15, 2006, Fred and Connie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Fred was a member of the Canadian Order of the Foresters. He loved curling, playing cards, and doing many jigsaw puzzles in the last few years. He also was an avid duck hunter before ill health stopped him from doing the many things he enjoyed.
Fred was a jack of all trades and taught his three sons his many talents.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Connie; sons, Mark (Kim) of Fort Frances, Ont. and Michael of Fort Frances, Ont.; daughter, Marilyn (Marcel) Turpin of Dryden, Ont.; and brother, Robert (Mary) of Ridgefield, Wash.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Dustin, Sean, and Chris Turpin, Many Labbe, and Allan, Holly, and Shenice McKelvie; sister-in-law, Donna McKelvie of Fort Frances, Ont.; many nieces and nephews; and his loyal friend, “Shiloh.”
Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date on McKelvie Island (Rainy Lake).
In memoriam donations may be made to the Kenora-Rainy River District Lung Association or the Canadian Cancer Society c/o Green Funeral Home, P.O. Box 427, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8.
