Florence Muriel (Brem) Dick passed away peacefully at Belleville General Hospital on Dec. 29, 2002 at the age of 87.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Norman; daughters, Barbara and Brenda (Rick) Courneya, and grandsons, Burton Courneya and Taolana Dick Chakela, all of Belleville, Ont.
Brem was born in Tilston, Man. on June 28, 1915. Her parents, George and Emily Bremner, raised a large family of 13. One brother survives, Gordon of Kelowna, B.C.
She will be fondly remembered by dozens of nieces and nephews.
She graduated as a nurse in Brandon, Man. in 1937, journeyed to Toronto, Ont. during the war, and in 1946 married Norman Dick in Vancouver, B.C.
From there, she and her husband embarked on a newspaper career that took them from the Vancouver News-Herald, to the Estevan Mercury and the Alameda Dispatch in Saskatchewan, to the Brandon Sun in Manitoba, and finally in 1952 to the Atikokan Progress in Northwestern Ontario, where they spent more than 35 years.
Here, Brem was active in the community. She taught Sunday School at Riverview United Church, was the first president of the Lionelles, served on the school board, and was elected Atikokan’s first female councillor.
In the late 1980s, she moved to Thunder Bay, Ont. and subsequently to southern Ontario to be closer to family.
There was no service by request. Cremation was entrusted to Wartman’s Funeral Home in Napanee, Ont.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
