FLORENCE MEDICINE (BIRD)

It is with great sadness the family announce that Florence Medicine (Bird) has passed away on August 7, 2025, at LaVerendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. She was born, October 20, 1953, at Lake of the Woods Hospital in Kenora, Ontario.

She was predeceased by her parents Catherine Bird (Hunter), Sabatise Bird; siblings Roseanna Big George (Kirkrude), Maggie White (Bird), Henry Bird, Clerance Henry, Margaret Muckle (Henry), Doris Henry, Alfred Henry, Alice Kelly (Henry) and a baby girl. She was also predeceased by her grandson Haiven Horton.

She is survived by her loving husband Joe Medicine; children Louisa Bird (Derek Skead), Roberta Missewace (Tim Missewace), Elias Bird (Monica Paul), Fabian Bird, Marian Paypom (Chris Missewace) and Luke Bird; grandchildren Stewart Bird, Skylan Skead, Cherrick Skead, Debonair Phillips, Darian Phillips, Jessie Phillips, Jevonte Phillips, Daevion Phillips, Jalatino Phillips, Zafrinah Missewace, Trinity Horton, Dawnas Horton, Elias Jr. Bird, November Bird, Elmer Missewace, Adelleena Missewace, Lillianna Missewace, Josephine Missewace; and great-grandchildren Enoch Bird, Echo Phillips, Lyric Phillips, Kelilah Phillips, Lyniah Phillips and Wiisaand Horton-Scott. She is survived by her sister and brother Agnes Paul and Eddie Bird; and also by numerous nieces and nephews.

Florence loved to Bead, Sew, camp and teasing. She enjoyed traveling to PowWows and ceremonies. In her spare time she liked to play Spider Solitaire, Poker Cards, going to Bingos and the Casino. She liked watching her favourite TV shows “First 48 Hours” and “North of 60.”

Florence took care of her grandchildren and did many years of foster care and worked taking care of elderly people in the community.

A traditional wake was held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Rainy River First Nation with a traditional service held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. with Elder Albert Hunter officiating.
