Evelyn Mary Stearns (nee Lewis), of Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011.
Evelyn was born Aug. 17, 1925 in Winnipeg, Man. and lived most of her life in the Elmwood area.
Evelyn had a long working career with CN Rail, retiring in 1983. She spent many weekends travelling to her summer cottage at Malachi Lake on the CN Camper Special—a train that made its way through the lake district of Northwestern Ontario each Friday evening and returned on Sundays, stopping at all the pretty lakes along the way to unload passengers and pets.
Evelyn moved to Fort Frances shortly after retiring, where she spent many years enjoying the quiet life a small town offered. Evelyn volunteered for many organizations and especially enjoyed her time spent at Rainycrest volunteering for the auxiliary.
Evelyn was a beautiful pianist, and would go to Rainycrest and share her music with the residents. She knew how much this meant to them.
Evelyn is survived by two sons, Eric Stearns (Linda) of Winnipeg, Man. and William Stearns (Robin) of Fort Frances, Ont.; and five grandchildren, Eric (Tamara) of Calgary, Alta., Kevin of Winnipeg, Man., Timothy (Laura) of Winnipeg, Man., and Devon and Katelynn of Fort Frances, Ont.
Evelyn also is survived by three beautiful great-grandchildren, Augustus of Winnipeg, Man. and newborn twin boys, Blake and Bennett of Calgary, Alta.
Evelyn was predeceased by her sister, Frances (Danny) of Victoria, B.C.; and is survived by two brothers, Earl (Norma) of Campbell River, B.C. and Gordon (June) of Los Angeles, Calif.
Cremation will take place at Rainy River Cremation Services in International Falls, Mn.
At Evelyn’s request, there will not be a funeral service.
Friends are invited to join Evelyn’s family at Rainycrest Long-Term Care, in the Activation Room, for tea and refreshments on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011 from 2-4 p.m.
