EVELYN HOGAN

After a courageous battle with cancer, Evelyn Diane Hogan, 64, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Thunder Bay, Ont.
She was born Oct. 16, 1948 to Ruth and Percy Huntley in Emo, Ont.
Evelyn grew up on a farm close to Bergland, Ont. She attended Tovell Elementary School and Rainy River High School. She then moved to Port Arthur to attend Lakehead Teachers’ College, and started teaching at the age of 17.
Evelyn married Paul in 1968, and were married for almost 45 years. Paul and Evelyn have been Lappe residents since 1972.
Evelyn was a devoted mother and grandmother. She also was an avid knitter and kept every newborn in her life wrapped in hand-knitted blankets. Her daughters and grandchildren were blessed with years of care packages, gifts, and cards.
In college, Julie and Karen were notorious for the care packages that regularly arrived.
As well, Evelyn was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed cheering for NASCAR drivers and curlers.
She retired at the age of 53 after 35 years of teaching. She enjoyed 11 years of retirement, which included many visits to Winnipeg and Ottawa to be with the grandchildren.
Her dream was to attend the Daytona 500, and she went with her daughters to Florida this past February to see the race.
After retirement, Evelyn actively kept up her friendships through functions such as the Gorham Ware retired teachers’ breakfast and the Lappe Ladies’ Group. She attended as long as her health allowed.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Ruth Huntley; sister, Elaine; and brother, Larry.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; daughter Julie (Jeff) Bell and grandchildren, Sarah, Megan, and Joshua, all of Winnipeg, Man.; daughter, Karen (Jared Roos) and grandchildren, Taeo and Keira, all of Ottawa, Ont.; and sister, Dorothy (Melvin) Martin of Winnipeg, Man.
She also is survived by many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A viewing will be held Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Lappe Lutheran Church. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Dan Repo officiating.
