Eunice Irene Rusnak (nee Van Tassel), born Feb. 15, 1933 in Worthington Township, Ont., passed away at the age of 74 on Saturday, June 2, 2007 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River, Ont.
Eunice fought a courageous battle with advanced auto-immune liver disease. She enjoyed her last months in the company of good friends and neighbours, under the watchful care of the staff at the Rainy River Health Centre.
Eunice was predeceased by her husband, George (1990); sisters, Margaret Scott and Edna Robar; mother, Violet Cliver; and father, David Van Tassel.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Diane) and Donald (Judy), all of St. Albert, Alta., Peggy (Shawn) Mapoles of Vancouver, B.C., and Jane (John) McDermid of St. Catharines, Ont.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Chris and Michelle Rusnak, Scott and Jessica Rusnak, Kiel, Nicole, Mark, and Georgia Mapoles, and Elizabeth McDermid; and sister, Judy (Jim) Gosnell of Kenora, Ont.
Eunice was a valued member of the Miriam Rebekah Lodge, Morson Ladies Institute, Past Noble Grand, Eastern Star, Moose Lodge, and Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary Br. #54.
She taught 4-H, cooked for the local school lunch program, and was a custodian at the CIBC bank. She also worked at Aikenheads Grocery, Rainy River Supermarket, and Lettner’s Gift Shop.
Eunice attended and volunteered at the Knox United Church, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Rainy River Hospital Auxiliary.
Eunice’s children kept her busy travelling across Canada and the U.S., as well as to England and Mexico. She was an avid gardener and talented cook, and also enjoyed curling, fishing, and quilting.
Eunice will be dearly missed.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Knox United Church in Rainy River, with Rev. Barbara Miller officiating.
Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River.
The pallbearers were Joan Hagarty, Rosemary Laevens, Verna Barsy, and Peggy Livingston.
The honourary pallbearers were Helen Kellner, Terry Swerbus, Grace Proteau, Betty Hagarty, Elsie Ewald, and Gail Yeryk.
