Ethel (Penny) McFarland passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont.
Ethel (Penny) was born Jan. 10, 1924 in Edinburgh, Scotland to William and Jemima Brown.
She married Canadian serviceman Claude McFarland in Edinburgh on March 10, 1943.
Ethel and her young toddler, Gerald, emigrated to Canada in May, 1945 abroad a 1920s-built luxury liner turned troop ship named The Scythia. She boarded the Scythia in Liverpool, England and docked at Pier 21 in Halifax, N.S. 11 days later. She then boarded a train to Port Arthur/Fort William, Ont.
Following her husband’s return from Europe, they resided in Fort Frances, raising four children, Gerald, Diane, Bonnie, and Sandy.
Ethel is survived by her sons, Gerald (Dorothy) McFarland of Elk River, Mn. and Sandy (Teryl) McFarland of Fort Frances, Ont.; daughters, Diane (Keith) Jordan of Fort Frances, Ont. and Bonnie (Richard) Pautz of Mankato, Mn.; sister, Iza Gillon of Fort Frances, Ont.; and nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Claude, in 2009; parents, William and Jemima; sisters, Minnie and Mary; and brothers, Bill, Tom, and James.
Ethel was a member of the Fort Frances War Brides Club until her passing, and a choir participant and member of the Presbyterian Church until it closed.
Mom always loved sewing; during her high school years in Edinburgh, she studied to be a tailoress and in earlier years used her skills mending and sewing for friends in the Fort Frances area.
Ethel’s recent hobbies included reading, sewing, gardening, knitting, and baking, in addition to her church choir activities.
A celeberation of her life will be held Friday, July 29, 2016 from 11-1 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Frances.
Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held.
