ETHEL FERN GUPPY

Ethel F. Guppy (nee Hampshire) passed away peacefully at the Emo Health Centre in Emo, Ont., with her family at her side, on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006 at the age of 87.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Walter Guppy; daughters, May Kavanaugh, Geraldine Spruce, Kathy Kavanaugh, Carol Gajardo, and Patty Hawk.
Also sadly missed by 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, MaryAnn and Charles Hampshire; sisters, Maude and Hattie; brother, Fred; husband, James Kavanaugh; sons, Melvin, Sherwin, and George Kavanaugh; and stepsons, Harry, Albert, Walter, and Robert Kavanaugh.
Ethel was born in the Township of Morley, Ont. on Oct. 10, 1919, but many of her childhood years were spent in Chatham, Ont.
After finishing school there, she returned to Stratton, Ont., where she met and married James Kavanaugh. Together they worked and raised their family until his untimely passing.
She then married Frank Hawk and had two daughters, Carol and Patty. She then moved to Winnipeg, Man., where she lived for 30 years.
During her lifetime, she endured many hardships, including two house fires, cancer, and the loss of her husband, James, and her three sons. Ever resilient, she always came back wiser and stronger than ever.
In later years, her dreams always brought her back home to the Rainy River area. She regaled many stories of fun and adventure, always recalling the good before the bad.
She returned in her later years to build a home and to live there for the rest of her life.
Here she met and married Walter Guppy. Mom and Walter spent many years traveling and visiting wherever their hearts desired. Now she travels on a higher road with her sons and other family and friends as her companions as they guide her to her final home.
“Mom, may the road always rise up to meet you, may the wind always be at your back, may the sun smile upon your face always. Until we meet again, we remember you always. Love your family.
The family wish to extend a sincere, heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Emo Health Centre for their kind and loving care of our mother over the years. Also a thank you to all in attendance and to those who were unable to attend.
A traditional burial ritual was held at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont. on Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, followed by burial in the Manitou Rapids (Rainy River First Nations) cemetery.
Elder George Boshkaykin officiated.
