Ethel Dora Paterson of Scarborough, Ont., formerly of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully at Scarborough General Hospital surrounded by family on Saturday, March 27, 1999.
She was born Jan. 17, 1913 to the late Arthur and Louise Message in Schreiber, Ont., where she received her early education. After completion of North Bay Normal School, Ethel taught elementary classes in the rural Fort Williams and South Gillies areas.
She also taught in Dinorwic, Ont. and at Robert Moore School in Fort Frances.
At the outbreak World War II , Ethel enlisted in the Women’s Division of the R.C.A.F., serving at Summerside, P.E.I. After the war, she enrolled in the University of Toronto, where she met her husband to be, Les Paterson, of Kenora, Ont.
Following graduation, they were married Dec. 22, 1951 in Schreiber and took up residence in Fort Frances.
Throughout her life, Ethel enjoyed needlework, gardening, cards, and golf. She was a life member of the Rebekah Lodge. She also worked with her husband to establish the Devlin Nurseries prior to the couple’s retirement.
Ethel will be sadly missed by her family and a host of friends, many of whom were her former students.
Ethel is survived by her husband, Les; daughter, Wendy (Rhys) of Scarborough; son, Stewart (Brenda) of Thunder Bay; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Arthur and Edward; and a sister in infancy.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 10, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Anglican Church (776 Brimley Rd.) in Scarborough, with Rev. Trevor Denny officiating.
