In loving memory of Emma Elizabeth Woods, 84, of Rainy-crest Home for the Aged, Fort Frances, Ont., who passed away Thursday, March 21, 2002 at her residence with family by her side.
Emma was born Aug. 11, 1917 in Fort Frances to Louis and Marie Bruyere. She attended Residential School on Couchiching First Nation, Ont., and spent most of her life here.
She was united in marriage to Alfred Woods on Aug. 28, 1935.
Emma worked in the Laundry Department at La Verendrye General Hospital for several years, then joined the staff at Rainycrest as a nurse’s aide. She retired in 1981.
Emma was a very active lady: she sat on the bargaining table for CUPE; spent time as chairman of the residents’ council at Green Manor; and was a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 26 years and of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 Ladies Auxiliary for 53 years.
Emma was an avid bowler. She also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, and cooking. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and often could be seen attending hockey games to cheer them on.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Woods on Dec. 14, 1961; parents, Louis and Marie Bruyere; and brothers, Michael, Theodore, Aldolphe, and Edwin Bruyere.
Emma will be greatly missed by her children, Jerry Woods and wife, Cathy, of Winnipeg, Man., Alfreda and husband, John Easton, of Fort Frances, Ont., Robert Woods and wife, Anne Marie, of Thunder Bay, Ont., and James Woods and wife, Laura, of Prince George, B.C.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Tracy and husband, Rick Baker, Tyler Woods, Jerry Woods Jr., Jay Woods, Blair Easton and wife, Leisha, Michelle Woods, Lindsay Woods, Amanda Woods, Colin Woods, Evan Woods, James Woods Jr., Christopher Woods and wife, Kelly, Alexandria Woods, Tobin Woods, Kylee Mainville, Jeremy Cunningham, and Amiee and husband, Shaun Kochon; and great-grandchildren, Andrew and Courtney Easton, Dylan Woods, Tyanne Woods, Kamyrn Mainville, and Mason Kochon.
She also leaves behind sisters, Mildred and husband, Norman Lockman, of Ignace, Ont., and Maria and husband, George Bakk, of Spruce Grove, Alta.; sisters-in-law, Lillian Bruyere of Atikokan, Ont., and Anne Marie Bruyere of Fort Frances, Ont.; family friends, Diane Schindel and Diane Woods; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Monday, March 25, 2002 from 7 until 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Parish prayers were offered at 7 p.m.
Funeral mass was held Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances. Fr. Eugene Whyte O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances.
The honour guard was provided by the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 Ladies Auxiliary.
The pallbearers were all of Emma’s grandsons. Honourary pallbearers were all of Emma’s granddaughters.
