Mr. Elmer Macklem, 85, passed away peacefully in Fort Frances, Ont. on July 1, 2004. He grew up in Fort Frances and was a longtime resident of Thunder Bay, Ont.
Elmer was a veteran of World War II, joining the Canadian Forestry Corps in 1940. He later transferred to the Calgary Tank Corps and participated in the liberation of Sicily and Italy.
After the war, he returned to Toronto, Ont., where he worked as a bricklayer until he moved to Thunder Bay in 1968. He worked in the Fort William post office as a letter carrier, retiring in 1984.
He was an avid curler and golfer, and he enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He also enjoyed activities with his friends at the 55 Plus Centre.
Elmer is survived by his son, Scott; step-children, Brian Alton (Maureen), Bob Alton (Geraldine), Bruce Alton (Marg), and Ruth Wilke; and sisters-in-law, Marjorie Macklem, Evelyn Simmons, and Laura Brown.
Many nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marie, in 2001; his first wife, Mary, in 1984; and his daughter-in-law, Debbie, in 2002.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 8, 2004 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Thunder Bay, with a reception to follow. A private family interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate in memoriam donations to the Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
