Ella Jewell passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. at the age of 98.
Until a recent move to Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ella had resided in Emo, Ont.
Ella was born in Rainy River, Ont. on Nov. 24, 1911 and named Margaret Edith Viola Ella Green. She was the youngest of the six children of Jeremiah Richard Green and Margaret (Sanderson) Green of Box Alder Township of Devlin, Ont.
As a young child, Ella was sickly and delicate. But thankfully her health improved and she was able to attend Box Alder School, where she held great memories of times with her friends.
She was a softball player in the Big Fork vicinity on the all-girls’ team and a member of the 4-H clubs.
Ella married Gilbert Jewell of Alysworth, Ont. on Feb. 15, 1930. They lived on the Jewell Farm in Alysworth from 1932 until 1961, when they sold and moved into Emo.
They celebrated 58 years of marriage before Gilbert passed away in July, 1988.
Ella was predeceased by her brothers-in-law, George, Bill, Wellington, and Lloyd Jewell; brothers, Ernest, Harold, and Lloyd Green; and sisters, Amanda Green and Rhoda Berry.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret Jewell; numerous nieces and nephews; and good friends, Bev and Gerry Collett.
Ella and Gilbert had three sons, Louis, Earl (deceased as an infant), and Arlo. Lou and Arlo both married and settled in Fort Frances originally, with Arlo relocating to Atikokan, Ont. in 1970.
Ella has nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and at last count nine great-great-grandchildren.
Ella loved spending time with her family and friends, visiting, reminiscing, and sharing tea.
Ella was always an active member of the communities she lived in. She was a member of the Alysworth Women’s Institute, the Emo United Church Women, and Legion Ladies Auxiliary, as well as membership in the Moose Lodge of International Falls.
During her years at the Queen Street Manor in Emo, Ella could be found organizing and participating in the many special events that took place with her neighbours.
She also began distributing farm fresh eggs from Nussbaumer’s farm, as she had done years earlier when she lived on the Jewell farm in Alysworth.
Ella’s special interests were always house plants (violets) and gardening. She was rewarded for her efforts with many prizes from the Emo Fair, as well as many compliments from friends, family, and neighbours.
Her quilting, sewing, and hand-made knit items will continue to be cherished by her family and friends for years to come.
Ella’s primary concern always remained with her family. She attended all the significant events, including graduations, weddings, birthdays, and other special events.
She and Gilbert made many trips to Fort Frances and Atikokan to visit the family.
Ella’s family and friends will remember her for a quick wit and straight up, just enough attitude. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched, however her memory will live on through all of us.
Visitation was held Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the Knox United Church in Emo, followed by a service at 2 p.m. and then a luncheon.
Rev. Frances Flook officiated, with interment in Emo Cemetery.
The pallbearers and honourary pallbearers were her grandsons, grandsons-in-law, and great-grandsons and great-grandsons-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
