Elizabeth “Betty” Maybee, age 81 years passed away at home on September 22, 2020.
Elizabeth (Betty) Maybee (nee Paldio) was born in Sutherland township, Ontario in 1939. She was the youngest of the three children born to Joseph and Elizabeth Paldio. Betty and the boys were raised on the farm, where they helped with chores, and walked to the small school a couple of miles down the road.
Betty was a strong, tough young lady. She lost her front teeth playing baseball in elementary school, and was known as quite the “race car driver” in high school. Betty followed the path of office training in high school, where she met the love of her life, Ted.
Betty was quite the avid five-pin bowler. She won several league championships and held high averages over several years.
Betty and Ted got married in 1960 and moved to Thunder Bay, where she got a job with the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Fish and Wildlife division. She would spend the next 37 years helping hunters and fishers understand the rules, and keeping the Conservation Officers in line. In 1970 and 1973, Betty welcomed her two children Jim and Leah-Ann. In 1973, Betty and the family moved to Kaministiquia, to get back to the country life that she loved. She enjoyed snowmobiling and riding motorcycles in the field. She grew many an amazing garden and raised chickens, geese and turkeys.
Betty lost her dad Joseph in 1972, her mom Elizabeth in 1984, and her brother William (Willy) in 1988.
Betty also loved knitting and crocheting, and spent many hours producing blankets, toques, mitts and scarves.
Betty retired from the MNR in 1997. This enabled her to spend more time with Ted and help him with many of their business ventures, from trucking to snowplowing, or vehicle escorting, or his golf course, Betty was there to help keep him organized and patch him up when he got hurt.
In 2008 and 2009, Betty traveled out west to be there for the birth of her two grandchildren, Cole and Olivia. She was a proud grandma and loved sharing pictures of her grandkids on Facebook.
In 2012, Betty lost the love of her life Ted, after 41 years of marriage. It was a difficult loss for her, which she never fully got over.
In the years following Ted’s passing, Betty kept more to herself, but did manage to spend time with friends and family. She especially enjoyed visits from her brother Joe, who she lost in 2019. Betty also loved to read and was great at texting, following the news & weather and stories on Facebook.
Betty leaves behind her son Jim and his two children Cole an Olivia, from Salmon Arm, B.C. and her daughter Leah-Ann from Coquitlam, B.C. She also leaves behind her nephew Mark Paldio (Maureen) of Pinewood, Ont. and her sister in law Sandy Howes of Thunder Bay, Ont. and Susan Martin of Chatham, Ont., as well as her nephews Tim and Dan Martin, Calgary, Alta. and Chatham, Ont. respectfully.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband Edward “Ted” Maybee, her parents Joseph and Elizabeth Paldio, brothers Willy and Joe, and brothers-in-law Duane Howse and George Martin.
As per Betty’s wishes, cremation has taken place, with private internment at a later date. If friends so desire, donations made in Betty’s memory can be made to the Thunder Bay District Humane Society, would be greatly appreciated.
