Elfva E. Larson, 87, of Atikokan, Ont., passed away at Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000. She was born June 1, 1913 in Fort Frances, Ont., to Sven (Swan) E. and Stina Carlson.
On Jan. 8, 1931, she was united in marriage to Edmond Walter Larson and together they lived in the Minahico-Bergland area. Elfva had worked as the secretary of the school board in Manahico in the late 1930s, and also was the secretary of the Woman’s Institute.
In 1943, they moved to Sioux Narrows, Ont., and for the next seven years worked at the Red Indian Lodge, which was owned by Charlie Crist.
Elfva also had worked as a cook at Calverts Camp on Miles Bay on Lake of the Woods.
In 1950, she became a member of the Sioux Narrows Community Centre Management Commission. She also was the secretary-treasurer of the Improvement District of Sioux Narrows until her retirement in 1973.
Elfva also had worked as a school bus driver, and spent the summers of 1974 and 1975 as a radio operator for the Ministry of Natural Resources.
She enjoyed picking blueberries, knitting, dancing, and playing bingo.
In 1988, Walter and Elfva moved to Atikokan, where Elfva remained living after the death of Walter on Oct. 22, 1992.
The family includes two sons, Harvey Larson and wife Senja, and Melvin Larson and wife Dora; and one daughter, Marianne Duhamel, all of Atikokan, Ont.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mrs. Edla Orwick of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother-in-law, Lester Larson of Atikokan, Ont; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Elfva was predeceased by her parents, Sven (Swan) E. and Stina Carlson; three sisters; and five brothers.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000 at 1 p.m. at Church of the Good Shepherd in Atikokan. Rev. Ruth Ivall officiated, with interment in the Little Falls Cemetery in Atikokan.
Honourary pallbearers were all of Elfva’s family and friends.
