It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eilleene (Bertha) McGowan on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances, Ont.
Eilleene was born in Barwick, Ont. on Feb. 23, 1929 and married Lloyd McGowan on April 22, 1949.
She was trained as a nurse and spent many years doing home care in Rainy River District.
Her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren and her church. She loved the time she spent at the Evangelical Covenant Church working with the ladies and just giving a helping hand.
She especially enjoyed her lunches that she attended after church.
She also loved to travel and even though her time spent travelling was few and far between, she talked about her travels with great fondness.
Eilleene will be lovingly and sadly missed by her son, Brent (Julie); grandchildren, Jason (Lesley Harding), Bryan, and Brenden; and her great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn and Rowena, all of Thunder Bay, Ont.
She also will be fondly remembered and missed by her daughter-in-law’s parents, Stan and Lena Grabowski, of Fort Frances, Ont.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Eilleene was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd McGowan, on Nov. 1, 2007; son, Warren; and her parents, her sister, Florence Angus, and her brother, Art Dowson.
A memorial service to celebrate Eilleene’s life will be held Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 1027 King’s Highway, Fort Frances, Ont., with Pastor Ken Johnson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 920 Frenette Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3N4 or to the charity of your choice c/o Green Funeral Home, P.O. Box 427, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8.
