Edwin James “Ted” Davis, 74, of Fort Frances, Ont. passed away Feb. 5, 2011.
Ted was born Oct. 21, 1936 in Fort Frances to Mac and Flo Davis. He married the love of his life, Fay Cooke, on April 8, 1958.
Ted was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was a hard-working, well-respected man with numerous talents.
Leaving home at age 16, he began work at Sand Island Falls, moving west to Fort McMurray, Alta. and then back to Fort Frances for Hydro, TV cable, and then the Fort Frances Police Department.
His life on the Manitou began in 1964, moving his family to Camp Beaverhead. During this time, they spent five seasons (July and August) at Great Bear Lodge in the North West Territories.
Winters being spent trapping and cutting right-aways on the Manitou.
In 1974, Ted and his family moved a house across the Manitou ice, which became their family home on Barker Bay for nearly 30 years.
Beginning in 1976, 23 summers were spent at Moose Point Lodge on Shikag Lake, with again winters back on the Manitou.
Barker Bay Resort and Outposts was established in 1997, with retirement in 2003.
Ted was not a man to be idle, so retirement only meant more time for hunting, plowing, freighting, building cabins, cutting and hauling firewood, repairing roads, helping friends and neighbours or anyone else who needed assistance, making regular trips to the shack, and spending more time with his grandsons, Bryan, Jamie, Jordan, and Jeff.
On Feb. 5, 2011 at 1:40 p.m., Ted left the Manitou, leaving behind many memories, friendships, and stories—none of which will be forgotten.
He left a lasting impression with anyone he met, even if it was a simple hello and handshake.
Ted is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Fay; sons, Rod (Veronica) and Mark (Karen); grandchildren, Bryan (Mary), Jamie (Alyssa), Jordan, and Jeff; step-grandchildren, Doug LeBlanc (Lisa) and Colin LeBlanc (Jennifer); in-laws, Dave (Clareen) Cooke, Lois (Wilfred) Caul, and Marg (Morley) Weatherbee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ted was predeceased by his parents, Mac and Flo Davis; sister, Maxine Barefoot; brothers-in-law, Harry Barefoot, Wallace Hughes, and Len Cooke; sister-in-law, Jean Hughes; and honourary sister, Shirley (Sam) Butler.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 11, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances.
The honourary pallbearers will be his sons, grandchildren, family, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, should family and friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to Mr. Tyler Romyn c/o Tim and Tammy Romyn, P.O. Box 84, Emo, Ont., P0W 1E0.
