It is with heavy hearts that the family of Edward Lloyd “Ed” Kryzanowski announces his passing on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at the Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan, Ont.
Ed was born Nov. 14, 1925 in Fort Frances, Ont. to the late Peter and Bernice Kryzanowski. He grew up in Fort Frances and graduated from Fort Frances High School.
During WWII, he served in the navy in Canada until his discharge from the service in 1945. Following the service, he attended the University of Toronto, where he graduated in 1948 with his B.P.H.E.
He also received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bemidji State University.
He later was drafted by the NHL, and played for the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks until his retirement in 1956. Ed also played in the American Hockey League in Hershey, Penn. and Rhode Island.
On June 18, 1949, Ed was united in marriage to the former Elaine Mallory.
During the NHL years, they raised their three children. Following his hockey career, Ed taught school in Atikokan, Warroad, Mn., and Colorado Springs, Colo. until his retirement from teaching in 1979.
At that time, he and his wife moved to Seine River, Ont., where they lived for a number of years. Then in 1995, they moved to Atikokan, where they have resided since.
In 1996, Ed was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in Thunder Bay, and into the University of Toronto Hall of Fame in 2006.
Ed loved his wife, Elaine’s, art work, including her paintings, reading, the lake and fishing, hockey, golf, and baseball, and mentoring young people and making new friends of all ages.
He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and hockey players from his past years and younger players in recent years.
He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Fred Carter, Herman Morphet, Albert Oster, and Arleigh Mallory; and sisters-in-law, Vivian Carter and Lenore Oster.
Ed is survived by his wife, Elaine Kryzanowski of Atikokan, Ont.; three children, Mallory Burton of Prince Rupert, B.C., Patti Kryzanowski of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kris Kryzanowski and his wife, Laura, of Colorado; four grandchildren, Anthony and wife, Marit Voitik, Jamal and Eric Allen, and Jaryl Mack; and one great-granddaughter, Alexa Voitik.
He also is survived by two sisters, Sophie and husband, Don Gillmor, of Minneapolis, Mn., and Emily Knights of Ottawa, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Harriett Morphet of Atikokan, Ont., Jennie Mallory of Fort Frances, Ont., and Geraldine Mallory of Calgary, Alta.; and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation will take place at Rainy River Cremation Services in International Falls, Mn.
A celebration of Ed’s life was held Monday, May 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Riverview United Church in Atikokan, with Rev. Gord Waldie officiating.
Interment will take place in Fort Frances Cemetery in Fort Frances at a later date.
The honourary pallbearers were John Sus, Clyde Franklin, Nels Stewart, Dan Danco, Don Clement, Gino Bertoldo, Adam Clement, Ray Bernatchez, and Ike Bruyere.
