Edward Kalar, 85, of International Falls, Mn., passed away Saturday afternoon, Aug. 16, 2008 at the Falls Good Samaritan Care Center in International Falls.
Ed was born Jan. 23, 1923 in South International Falls, Mn., the youngest of nine boys followed by his sister. He graduated from Falls High School in 1941.
He was in the first class to graduate from Backus High School. He then served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was stationed in the South Pacific.
He was united in marriage to the former Marjorie Mills on Nov. 20, 1948 in Fort Frances, Ont. They were married nearly 60 years.
Ed was employed at Mando and then Boise Cascade. He was the head fireman in the steam room (now power and recovery). He retired in 1985 with 44 years of service.
Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and camping. He was proud of his hunting shack, and being one of the first county lease holders with Lease #17. He had a hidden talent for art, enjoyed spending time with his family, and was inseparable from his wife, Marjorie.
Ed also was a member of Faith United Church of Christ, an active member of the local union, and a member and supporter of the South International Falls Fire Department, which he served as fire chief for several years.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Frances (Rubar) Kalar; daughter, Marjorie Ann Kalar; son, Douglas Edward Kalar; eight brothers, John, Joseph, Louis, Tony, Max, Harry, Emil, and Albert; and sister, Mary Fintland.
Ed is survived by his wife, Marjorie of International Falls, Mn.; daughter, Mary (Duane) Nelson of International Falls, Mn.; sons, Bill (Peg) Kalar of Fergus Falls, Mn. and Pete Kalar of International Falls, Mn.; six grandchildren, Chad and Clay Nelson, and Anne, Joe, Sam, and Rebecca Kalar; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008 at Faith United Church of Christ.
Interment will be in the V.F.W. Section of Forest Hill Cemetery.
The Family would prefer memorials to the Good Samaritan Care Center.
