Ed (Badabaswewitung) Atatise Sr., 66, of Lac La Croix First Nation, Ont., passed away at his residence on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009.
Ed was born Wednesday, March 17, 1943 at Lac La Croix First Nation to the late Edward Atatise and Elizabeth (Caribou) Boshey.
Ed had worked for the Ontario Provincial Police detachment in Emo for 15 years. His most recent job was a family services worker, which he did for more than 10 years.
He was a traditional dancer, traditional healer, and drum keeper. He enjoyed the outdoors, and loved to hunt and fish.
He was a true family man who loved spending time with his family. He loved raising and taking care of children, talking to people, and helping others in their time of need. Because of this, he gained many friends throughout the district.
He enjoyed the casino, singing karaoke, and playing the guitar and fiddle. He also enjoyed restoring small engines and vehicles.
Ed was united in marriage on March 8, 1966 to the former Josephine Jourdain, who survives along with his children, Lorena (Marcel) Bananish of Lac La Croix First Nation, Ont., Robin Atatise (Russell Bunn) of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Edward Atatise Jr. (Emily Seeton) of Lac La Croix First Nation, Ont.; three grandchildren, Marcel Bananish Jr., Miigwan Buswa, and Kieran Esquega-Atatise; and his step-grandchild, Rebecca Bunn.
Also left to cherish his memory are children he cared for as his own, Karen Geyshick, Shalon Adams, Audrey Brown, Tanya Atatise, and Vincent Tookenay and their children.
Also surviving are his siblings, John Boshey Jr. (Ruby), Jim Atatise (Nora Jourdain), Alma (Edward) Ottertail, Justin Boshey (Sandra Smith), and Janice (Angus) Jourdain; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edward Atatise and Elizabeth Boshey; his step-father, John Boshey Sr.; and siblings, Sam, Bob, and Billy Atatise, Alfred Boshey, Nancy Murto, and Alice Boshey.
A traditional funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 in the morning at the Roundhouse at Lac La Croix First Nation. Elder Peter White officiated, followed by interment in the Lac La Croix First Nation Cemetery.
A funeral wake was held Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 from 2 p.m. at the Roundhouse at Lac La Croix First Nation.
The pallbearers were Ted Atatise, Andrew Jourdain, Pernell Ottertail, Brad Atatise, Richard Boshey, Angus Jourdain Jr., Frank Jordan Jr., Mahengun Goodsky, Lester Atatise, and Stacey Boshey.
The honourary pallbearers were all of Ed’s family and friends.
