Ernest Derward Angus, 96, passed away Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances, Ont.
Derward was born in Garson, Man. on Feb. 26, 1910 to Edna and Ernest Angus.
He was united in marriage to Helma (Widgren) on Sept. 7, 1934, and they were happily married for more than 66 years. Together they raised four children.
Derward lived most of his life in Burriss, Ont. In his younger days, he worked in the logging and trucking business, and briefly at the paper mill.
His passion for the outdoors led him into the tourist camp business. For many years, he worked for Lyla and Joe Hodge at Northwest Bay in Devlin.
In 1965, he and Helma acquired their own resort, Birch Point Camp—a dream come true.
After selling their resort and a brief retirement, he continued his work in the tourist business at Parkview Trailer Camp in Nestor Falls, Ont.
Derward and Helma later moved to Fort Frances and retired. Derward was fortunate to continue with good health and enjoy many years participating in curling, horseshoes, and, of course, fishing.
He loved his life on the lake, especially when his family was with him. Derward always said he didn’t have to travel worldwide because “there were lots of unexplored bays on Rainy Lake.”
He opened his heart and home to everyone. He had a gentle kindness and integrity that endeared him to his many friends and neighbours.
Derward is survived by his three children, Merle (Alan) Warner, Don (Sharon) Angus, and Larry (Bev) Angus.
Surviving grandchildren are Kerry Rosenbarger, Brenda (Dan) Bock, Nancy Miller, Bradley Miller, Wayne (Cheryl) Angus, Lisa (Rob) Armstrong, Mark (Karen) Angus, John (Lisa) Angus, Rod Angus and friend, Debbie McLean, and Lara Angus.
He also is survived by 15 great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Mason Rosenbarger, Tyler Miller, Cody and Christian Miller, Jeffrey, Jason, Joey and Justin Angus, Alyssa Armstrong, Amanda Angus, Tanner and Austin Angus, and Maddisyn and Myla Angus.
Derward also is survived by his sister, Anna Mose; and sisters-in-law, Violet Angus and Evelyn Widgren.
Derward was predeceased by his wife, Helma (2001); and his daughter, Marion, and her husband, Bill Reese. He also was predeceased by son-in-law, Bill Miller.
Derward also was predeceased by his sister, Helen and her husband, Rollie Hyre; brother, Leonard; sister-in-law, Olive and her husband, Frank Advent; and brother-in-law, Telford Widgren.
