February 24, 1930 – May 19, 2026
With great sadness, the family of Charles Doug Medhurst announces his passing on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at Rainycrest Home for the Aged.
Doug was born in Calgary, Alberta, to Hubert and Kathleen (nee O’Connell) Medhurst. At the age of one, he moved to Fort Frances with his parents.
Doug grew up in Fort Frances. He completed his education at St. Mary’s School and Fort Frances High School. Doug was a member of the inaugural Muskie Football Team. Doug attended Lakehead Technical Institute School in Port Arthur in 1950 and 1951. He played on the basketball team while there.
Doug first started working for the local mill in June 1948, as a laborer in the Groundwood and Tie Mill Depts. During his summer break from forestry school, he worked as a Junior Forester. After graduating from Lakehead Institute in May of 1951, he joined the Company Forest Management Dept as Timber Cruiser, and then to Assistant Forester in the Fort Frances Logging Division. He worked in many areas of NW Ontario including Atikokan, Dryden, Camp Robinson, Kenora, and Fort Frances. He was the MC at the Logger Sports in Emo for many years which brought him much enjoyment. In 1971, Doug was transferred to Fort Frances as Assistant Timber Buyer. On February 1, 1979, Doug was appointed Manager Purchase Pulp Wood, a position he held until his retirement in August 1989.

Doug was united in marriage to Lois (Carlson) on September 5, 1953. Together, they spent many wonderful years camping, travelling, entertaining friends, and enjoying each other’s company. Many of the friends they entertained came to be more than friends. They were family!
In the early 70’s, Doug, alongside his father Hubert, built a beautiful home from the ground up. This included logging and milling of the trees to make the lumber to build the house. We are all very proud of this wonderful place we call home to this day!
Doug had many pastimes he thoroughly enjoyed, including golfing, curling, gardening, sailing, and woodworking. He also volunteered many hours at Riverside and Rainycrest. In his later years, he could be seen on his daily hour long walk, or cruising around in his red scooter. Doug has many amazing neighbours who have assisted Doug over the years.
Doug is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Paul and Lorri (Gustafson); their children Jenny, Kelsey and Travis Medhurst; daughter Kathleen (Rich); his grandsons Josh and Jeremy Scholten; and their father Ted Scholten. He is also survived by his niece and nephew Shelly and Tom.
He was predeceased by his wife Lois (Carlson) and his son John; his sister Pat, her husband Harry Walden, and their son Albert. He was predeceased by his parents Hubert and Kathleen Medhurst, and Hubert’s second wife Clara. He was also predeceased by his step-brother Fred Grozelle and wife Pat and Fred’s son Michael; surviving are Fred’s children John and Carla.
We would like to thank the staff at Riverside, including the ER, and the therapy department. Dad spent his last few months at Rainycrest. We cannot express enough gratitude for the wonderful (and sometimes very humourous) care he was given.
There will be no service at this time, as per dad’s wishes.
Arrangements entrusted to Northridge Funeral Home Ltd., Emo, Ontario.
