DOROTHY KELLY

DOROTHY KELLY
“THUNDER WOMAN”
STURGEON CLAN
With great sadness we announce the passing of Dorothy Kelly of Onigaming First Nation at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora, Ont.
Dorothy was born in Fort Frances, Ont.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward Kelly, in 1990; infant son, David and Edward Jr.; parents, Bert and Frances Yerxa; brother, Robert Yerxa; and sisters, Beatrice Kenny and Florence Foy.
Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her brothers, William (Florence), Wayne (Margaret), and Leo (Maxine) Yerxa; and sisters, Marilyn Perrault and Joyce Cantin.
Also surviving are her in-laws, Aldin Foy Sr., Hilda Yerxa, Alice Hoard, Mary Kelly, John Jim Kelly (Catherine), Bob Kelly (Delores), Colin Kelly and Corrine Kelly, and Juanita Jourdain.
After attending residential school, Dorothy went to work at White Pine Lodge when she was 16, where she met her future husband, Edward. She chummed around with Louise Mandamin (Robinson).
Mom leaves a strong family as her lasting legacy. Her pride was her home, her children and their families, and the gatherings they shared together.
She is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Tom) of Keewatin, Ont., Sharon, Sheila (Riel), and Ramona (Ron Jr.), and her sons, Daniel (Rose), Vincent (Diane), Duane (Betty), Michael, Clarence (Toni), Kelvin, and Derek (April), all of Onigaming.
Grandma will be especially missed by her grandchildren, Reanna, Rochelle, Ethan, Evan, and Easton, whom she cared for at home. She took great pride in her grandchildren and they will miss her presence at special occasions.
Mom was a great-grandma to numerous great-grandchildren and will be missed by many nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Janice (Brian) Cullen of Brandon, Man.
Her friends will say that Dorothy was a humble and quiet-natured, compassionate woman, always there for those who needed her love and compassion.
Known as KoKo, she dedicated her life to the little ones continuing to work at the Onigaming Day Care until her illness.
In the past, she was known for her leather work and beading. Quietly busying herself with her little sewing projects, she also enjoyed her Bingo with her Bingo buddies.
Dorothy was always willing to cook for community events and helping out where she could.
The family would like to acknowledge Donna Mae Joseph for her companionship to our mother while at the hospital, to the 3rd Floor nurses, with special thanks to Juanita Petiquan, and Drs. Diamond, Harland, and Pedersen.
A wake will take place starting on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 30, 2006, with services to follow on Friday, Dec. 1, 2006 at Onigaming First Nation.
