Doris W. Thayer, 99, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Saturday, March 27, 1999 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.
Doris was born Feb. 24, 1900 in Coudersport, Penn. to the late Horace Vredenburg and Minnie Quimby. On Nov. 28, 1920, she was united in marriage to L. Walter Thayer.
In the mid-1920s, Doris and Walter moved to Canada and settled in the Ottawa area. In the mid-1930s, they moved to Mine Centre, Ont., where Walter worked in the mine. Following a mining accident that left Walter crippled, Doris worked as a cook in local tourist camps.
In the 1950s, Doris and Walter moved to Fort Frances, where she worked doing home care and continued her work as a cook.
She was a member of the McIrvine Women’s Institute, the Historical Society, and the Evangelical Covenant Church. She enjoyed the friendship of her Birthday Club, and was very involved in activities with her friends while living in Elizabeth Manor.
Doris was an expert seamstress and enjoyed needlework art, handiwork of any kind, flowers and gardening, and involvement in several Bible studies. She especially enjoyed visits from friends and family, whom she loved very much.
Doris was a woman whose life was defined by strength and character, and by determination. Not only were these qualities evident in her life but she also shared those qualities with those in need of them, and challenged her family to live their lives with those qualifies, too.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Thayer; two sons, Ivan and Harold Thayer; and two daughters, Velma Neely and Rita Thayer.
Doris is survived by her two daughters, Evelyn and husband, Ross Webb, of Fort Frances, Ont., and Melody Thayer of Round Rock, Tx.; son, Leslie Thayer and wife, Sharon, of International Falls, Mn.; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 1, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Rev. Patrick Playfair will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends may visit Wednesday, March 31, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Pallbearers will be Joe Hickerson, Ray Hickerson, Pat Hickerson, Scott Forsythe, Brian Webb, and Ken Wickstrom.
Honourary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Noella Strain, Hazel Neely, Valerie Whitter, Cheryl Clifford, Kathy Ann Colgan, and Leslie Ann Thayer.
