Doris Tanner, 80, of 1231 King’s Highway, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence Wednesday, May 7, 2003.
She was born Sept. 29, 1922 in Graceton, Mn. to the late Hugo and Daisy Hanson. In 1925, Doris moved with her family to Canada, where they settled in Rainy River, Ont.
Doris completed high school in Rainy River.
On July 4, 1942, Doris was united in marriage to Norman Thornton, and moved to Spohn Township to live for a few years. In the 1950s, they moved to Fort Frances, where she raised her family.
Doris worked as a cook for several camps and restaurants in the local area for many years.
Following the passing of her husband, Norman, she married Robert Tanner. From Fort Frances, they moved to Prince George, B.C. to live until returning to the Rainy River District in 1979, where they made their home in Morson.
In 1997, Doris moved to Fort Frances, where she had lived since.
She was a member of the Moose, a 20-year member of the Royal Canadian legion Br. #54 in Rainy River, and council member in Morson for several years. She also was an avid reader and gardener.
Her enjoyment included needle work, crocheting and travelling.
Doris’ companion and friend, “Patches,” at home had comforted her for many years.
She was predeceased by her second husband, Robert Tanner; one son, Gary Tanner; and one brother, Ralph Hanson.
Doris is survived by her two daughters, Norma and husband, Carl Piotrowski, and Sharon and husband, Peter Piotrowski, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; one son, Mervin Thornton of Mission, B.C.; nine grandchildren, Dawn and husband, Jim Andrews, John Piotrowski and wife, Kathy, Susan Giles and friend, Rodney Jones, Jennifer and husband, Mark Cawston, Stephanie Piotrowski, Kimberly Piotrowski, and Kyle, Kandice, and Jesse Thornton; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are one sister, Vivian and husband, Fred Hartnell, of Rainy River, Ont.; three brothers, Earl Hanson and wife, Rose, and Everett Hanson and wife, Irene, all of Rainy River, Ont., and Dale Hanson and wife, Jeanine, of Dryden, Ont.; one sister-in-law, Nancy Hanson of Rainy River, Ont.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at 2 p.m.
at Knox United Church in Rainy River, with Rev. Frances Flook officiating.
Cremation will take place, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River at a later date.
Pallbearers will be Cam Hanson, Tim Hanson, Everett Hartnell, Doug Hartnell, Jamie Hartnell, and Brent Anderson.
Honourary pallbearers will be all of Doris’ family and friends.
