DORIS (“OZHAASHKOKAMIGOK”) WHITEFISH

The Whitefish family sorrowfully announces the passing of Doris “Ozhaashkokamigok” Whitefish, 90, of Lac La Croix First Nation, on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009 at the Atikokan General Hospital extended care ward with her family and friends by her side.
Ozhaashkokamigok was born July 30, 1918 in Kawa Bay, Ont. Her greatest joys in life were jingle dress dancing, playing cards, sewing, doing puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.
She travelled to many pow-wows, and quit jingle dress dancing at age 82.
During her pow-wow trail, she gained life-long friendships and greeted any person with a big smile, even though she did not speak English.
Ozhaashkokamigok believed in her traditional culture. She will be sadly missed.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband, John Whitefish; son, Thomas Whitefish; daughter, Beatrice Ottertail; great-grandson, Phillip Whitefish; and all of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children, Sheila (Jerry), Rita (Tommy), James, Elmer, Clifford (Roma), Jane (Ralph Sr.), and Wayne (Beatrice); grandchildren, Jonathan (Trisha), Blair (Alysha), Gary, Les (Hannah), Lisa, Mike, Duane, Jason (Linda), Cindy, Jackie (Derek), Desmond, Roberta, Dorothy (Curtis), Barry, Stacey, Delbert, Ralph Jr., Chris, Cory, Troy, Crystal, Dawn, Darren, Saxon, and Josh; great-grandchildren, Madison, Leila, Tristan, Tiffanie, Rayna, Tye, Trey, Shania, Brody, Christine, Jason Jr., Brittany, John, Ian, Chad, Aliyah, Meghan, Ken, Natasha, Kelsey, Evelyn, Brandy, Alexandra, Elsie, Sheldon, Paige, Shakira, Janie, Selina, Cara, and Trion; and two great-great-grandchildren, Damaris and Peyton.
Also surviving are her nephews and nieces, George, Albert, Bob, Helen, Bessie, and Roma,
A traditional burial ritual will be held Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 in the morning at the Lac La Croix First Nation round house. Elder Peter White will officiate, with burial in the Lac La Croix First Nation cemetery.
A wake will be held Thursday evening, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Lac La Croix First Nation round house.
The pallbearers will be Jonathan Ottertail, Blair Whitefish, Mike Ottertail, Gary Whitefish, Les Whitefish, Delbert Whitefish, Barry Whitefish, and Ralph Ottertail, Jr.
The honourary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and those who loved her.
