It is with sadness that the family of Donald McCabe announces his passing on Monday, January 4, 2010. Don lived in Fort Frances for most of his life. He also lived in International Falls, Atikokan and Toronto. He was born in Fort Frances on February 17, 1931 to the late James McCabe and Elva McCabe-Nance.
Donald is survived by his wife Wilma, one daughter, Brenda (Mervon) Hartlin of Emo, and four sons, Brad of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Brian (Tammy), Cory (Wanda), and Michael all of Fort Frances. Donald is also survived by four grandchildren, Taylor, Nicole, Brayden and Evan, a very special Aunt, Marjorie and a special family friend, Glenn. Donald is now with his parents Elva and James, his sisters, Norma Perlett and Winnifred Shorr and brother Gordon.
Dad loved spending time at the lake, and he spent many weekends on Rainy Lake fishing with his family and visiting with friends. In later years he cherished time spent at the cabin on Tupman Lake, he enjoyed the outdoors and was a jack-of-all-trades, tinkering with anything that might need fixing. Throughout the years Donald had many jobs. He was employed by Becks Brewery as a truck driver/pop salesman and at Central Service in Fort Frances as a mechanic. Donald started working in the mill in 1978 as a security guard and before he retired in 1996 he worked as a toll collector on the International Bridge.
As per Donald’s request there will be no funeral services. A private family celebration of Don’s life will be held in the spring.
