DOLORES (DODE) MEYERS

Meyers, Dolores

It is with great sadness that the family of Dolores (Dode) Meyers announces her passing on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River, Ont.
Dode was born March 13, 1930 in Bergland, Ont. to Henry and Nora Nordin. She lived and attended elementary school there.
When it was time to attend high school, she lived with the Vic Croxford family as there were no school buses. Dode helped take care of the young children in the Croxford family.
When the Croxfords moved to Winnipeg, Man., Dode went with them and attended General Byng High School for Grades 11 and 12.
After graduating from Grade 12, Dode returned to Bergland and was hired to teach at the two-room school there. She was 17 years old.
She attended “summer school” for teachers in Toronto that summer and started teaching in September. She taught the lower grades for four years and attended “summer school” for four summers.
While teaching, Dode met a handsome young man from Stratton, Murray Meyers, and they were married on Dec. 8, 1951. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this past December.
Dode and Murray had three children: Diane, Skip (Murray Jr.), and Bruce.
When Murray took over the Imperial Oil bulk agency, Dode was his rock. While he delivered fuel and gas around the area, she took all the calls from people needing the fuel and took in the payments when people stopped in to pay their bills.
On many days there were 20 telephone calls, plus people coming to pay their bills, and yet she still managed to cook three large meals a day, bake her famous pies and cakes, and vacuum through the house daily. She did laundry, too!
She was a fast, efficient worker.
Dode loved to curl and she learned from Mrs. Lund, her first skip. She also played Bridge with a great group of ladies.
Dode took up golfing in her early 50s and she loved it. She also loved to go to the casino. Murray and Dode travelled to Las Vegas with their friends and had great times together.
They also went on trips with other ESSO agents and travelled to places they nevere would have gone otherwise.
Dode had a great sense of humour and was very witty. She had lots of great sayings and many superstitions, which she passed on to her family.
Dode was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease about 13 years ago. But she never let the disease get her down and she never said “Why me?” She just kept on going as she always had done.
She passed away as she had done everything else—quickly. Her family is greatful she did not suffer.
Dode was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Nora; husband, Murray; and sisters, Ramona (Raye) Olson and Doreen Olson.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Diane (Ole) Hensrud of Maple Ridge, B.C., Skip of Rainy River, Ont., and Bruce (Joanne) of Kenora, Ont. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Casey (Angela) Hensrud, Katie Hensrud, Jenn Meyers (Adam Schuster), Michael Meyers, and Jordan Meyers.
Dode also will be missed by her sister, Barbara (Dennis) Moffat of Red Deer, Alta.; brother-in-law, Dennis Olson of Kenora, Ont.; and many nieces and nephews.
Dode was admired by all who knew her for her great will to carry on, and will be greatly missed by her friends and acquaintances.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be held Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Knox United Church in Rainy River, with Frances Flook officiating.
