DMYTRO ‘METRO’ BADIUK

On the evening of Monday, Nov. 28, 2016, Dmytro “Metro” Badiuk passed away peacefully at the age of 98 with his family at his side.
And though he is leaving behind so many who will miss him, some happiness is to be found knowing he will be reunited with his late daughter, Elaine, who was lost earlier this year.
Metro was born in Stuartburn, Man. to George and Mary Badiuk. During boyhood, however, his family moved to Fort Frances, Ont. Here he would build a life for himself and his family.
As a young man with tremendous potential, Metro graduated high school at the early age of 16. He began his career at the Rainy Lake Hotel, starting as a bellboy and leaving as the hotel manager. He shared many fond memories of that time in his life with his family and friends.
In 1941, he was enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he served with the Royal Canadian Corps, assuming an administrative position within its training branch.
Upon his discharge from the army, Metro returned to Fort Frances, the hotel business, and his soon-to-be wife, Mary Bybliw, whom he wed in 1948. Together they had two girls, Elaine and Joan.
In 1956, Metro began working at the town mill; first in the payroll department and later taking a position as Accounts Payable Supervisor. In 1970, he became Stores Supervisor and, as a result of his potential and dedication, assumed his final role as the mill’s Purchasing Manager.
Metro loved his work and the people he worked with so much that he even worked an extra two years after officially retiring in 1983.
Metro will be remembered by many as a pillar of his community. He volunteered much of his life to helping others and was committed to the Ukrainian community, the Orthodox Church, and the many town boards that he belonged to.
Family meant the world to Metro. He loved his brothers and the time he spent with them at the cabin on Rainy Lake. He always was there for this parents, siblings, wife, daughters, and grandchildren.
Metro and Mary moved to Nanaimo, B.C., where he was close to his daughters and grandchildren. Although he loved his time with the family, he never considered it home—his heart still was in Fort Frances.
Metro is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary; his daughter, Joan (son-in-law, Don); their children, Leah (Jan) and Tyler; and his late daughter Elaine’s children, Andrew and Alyssa.
As for his spirit, his family knows where he still can be found–in the woods that were his home, by the cabin, among the trees, forever along the shores of Rainy Lake.
A funeral service will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Sands Funeral Home in Nanaimo, with Rev. Chad Pawlyshyn officiating.
Cremation will take place and Metro will be returned to his hometown to rest at Riverview Cemetery.
Metro, Moon, Dad, Gigi, we love you. Rest in peace.
