DENNIS LAVERN COPENACE

August 28, 1956 – October 13, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family announces the passing of Dennis Lavern Copenace.

Dennis was born on August 28, 1956, in Emo, Ontario. He was known by his traditional Anishinaabe name, Aanash, and was a proud member of the Elk Clan.

Dennis leaves behind his loving sons Donald “Kimbi”(Jaymie), Curtis, Dennis “Snake” (Kendra), and Kenneth (Aryn). He will be lovingly remembered by his cherished grandchildren Madison, Hunter, Miah, Justice, Romyn, Dante, Ben, Echo, Nikolai, and William, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Dennis was predeceased by his parents Henry and Lucy Copenace; and his sister Erlene (Gayle).

Throughout his life, Dennis was a hardworking and talented man who wore many hats. He worked as a fishing and hunting guide, carpenter, and mechanic. He was skilled with his hands and had a natural ability to fix just about anything. He could often be found in his backyard tinkering with small engines, taking apart motors, and bringing them back to life. There was always something to work on, and Dennis was happiest when he had a project to keep his hands busy.

Dennis had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. Whether he was fishing, spending time at the cabin, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of nature, these were the places where he felt most at home.

Above all, Dennis treasured his family, especially his grandchildren. He found great joy in listening to their stories, sharing laughs, and reminiscing about the funny things they had said or done over the years. He had a way of remembering those little moments and bringing them up again, often with a smile and a laugh. These memories will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.

Dennis will be remembered for his hardworking nature, his love of the outdoors, his ability to bring things back to life, and the special bond he shared with his family. Although he will be deeply missed, his stories, laughter, teachings, and memories will live on through his children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives he touched.

A Special Thank You

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at La Verendrye Hospital for the kindness, compassion, and care shown to Dennis during his time there. Your dedication, patience, and support brought comfort to Dennis and his family during a difficult time. We are truly grateful for the care and dignity you provided him in his final days. Your kindness will always be remembered.

A wake service was held on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at the Onigaming Mini Mall, beginning at 4 pm.

A traditional Anishinaabe funeral service followed on Monday, October 19, 2026, at 10 a.m. officiated by Elder Tommy Councillor.

Forever loved, deeply missed, and never forgotten.

Baamaapii giga-waabamin — Until we meet again.
