It is great sorrow that the family of Darrel Whitefield announces his passing on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 in Fort Frances, Ont.
Darrel was born Feb. 19, 1950 in Fort Frances to Millie and Reginald Whitefield.
He joined the staff at the Fort Frances Times at age 16, working as a pressman. In 1975, he headed west, living in Medicine Hat, Calgary, and Winnipeg.
In 1978, he returned to Fort Frances, rejoining the staff at the Times, where he worked until his passing.
On Nov. 16, 1984, Darrel was united in marriage to Cecilia Big George. They travelled throughout Canada and the United States, seeing the countryside and attending pow-wows.
He truly loved to spend time with Cecilia’s grandchildren; taking them on outings to the park, playing numerous games, and attending their various activities.
He also enjoyed visiting with his friends over a cup of coffee.
He leaves behind his mother, Millie Whitefield of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother, Duane Whitefield of Fort Frances, Ont.; sister, Pam and husband Leland Westover, of Stratton, Ont. and their sons, Clint and Clay.
He also is survived by his wife, Cecilia Whitefield of Rainy River, Ont.; stepchildren, Daniel Big George of Big Grassy First Nation and Patricia Big George of Rainy River, Ont.; step-grandchildren, Tishina Big George, Kyla Archie, Kyda Archie, and Chelsea Archie; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Darrel was predeceased by his father, Reginald, on Oct. 24, 1991.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 13, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Frances, with Pastor Brian Keffer officiating.
