Clara Marr passed away peacefully, at the age of 94, on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017 at the Carewest George Boyak Nursing Home in Calgary, Alta.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Dennis; daughter-in-law, Sharon; as well as two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Marr, in July, 2009.
Clara was born on May 23, 1922 and raised on a farm north of Rainy River, Ont. She became a teacher and spent her early years teaching in one-room schools in Northwestern and southeastern Ontario before returning to Rainy River, where she taught elementary school for more than 25 years.
In the late 1980s, Clara and Gerry moved to Victoria, B.C. to be closer to their son’s family. Her final eight years were spent in Calgary, where her son and family reside.
Clara never forgot her early days growing up near Lake of the Woods. She remembered fondly her time spent working at the lake as a teenager, as well as other activities such as blueberry-picking with her family.
We will remember Clara for her enthusiasm and eagerness to try something new. She loved teaching and children, and always was excited when an ex-student called or visited her with an update on their life.
She also loved gardening, hiking, and travelling.
Most importantly, Clara will be remembered by her surviving family as someone who encouraged us to engage the world, try something new, and pursue new challenges with vigour. If we did, she was always there to support us.
She will be remembered.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220–4 St. N.W., Calgary, Alta.
