Lovern and Carol Affleck of Fort Frances, Ont. were taken from us tragically on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
Carol was born on Dec. 25, 1950 in Vancouver, B.C. to William and Hazel Barnes (Bannister). The Barnes family moved to Rutland, B.C. in 1959, where the family owned and operated Whispering Pines Rest Home.
Carol graduated from Rutland Senior High School in 1968. In 1970, she began working for the Royal Bank of Canada, where she remained for close to 20 years–all the while dedicated to supporting her family and raising her two young boys.
Lovern was born on May 16, 1939 in Durban, Man. to Orville and Dorothy Affleck (Elgie). Lovern eventually settled in Kamloops, B.C., with his wife and three daughters and later was reunited with his first son.
Lovern was a long-haul truck driver for more than 50 years, and loved the open road.
Carol and Lovern married on Feb. 14, 1986 in Cache Creek, B.C. and made Interior BC their home for the next 25 years. Their lives centered on supporting and raising Lovern’s three daughters, Carol’s two sons, and on hard work for the family trucking business.
As the family grew and spread out, Lovern and Carol travelled to all corners of North America in their big rig with their dog, “Mac.”
In 2012, they retired and moved to Fort Frances, Ont. to be closer to their youngest grandchildren.
During their time in Fort Frances, Carol and Lovern developed many friendships and became active members of the community, devoting many volunteer hours at the local seniors’ centre and the Royal Canadian Legion.
Carol was honoured in 2016 as the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year.
Lovern and Carol loved spending time with family and friends, whether lending a helping hand, dancing at the local pubs, or gathering for a celebration.
Carol was known to take on all kinds of home improvement projects, enjoying the hard work and satisfaction of completing the work herself. Lovern could be seen each day walking the Rainy River shoreline and chatting with anyone who passed by.
They both especially loved camping with their grandchildren, where Carol went to great lengths to organize scavenger hunts, relay games, and activities that will live on in their memories forever.
Carol’s kindness, gentle heart, and the selfless way she put others needs before her own, and Lovern’s easy smile, passion, and love of his family, leave them forever cherished by their friends and family.
They will be deeply missed by their children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the Gearty-Delmore Plymouth Chapel in Plymouth, Mn.
