Bruce Martin Selman, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances.
Bruce was born Sept. 14, 1957 in Fort Frances. He had lived most of his life in the district.
In 1985, he had worked as a chef at Boston Pizza in Thunder Bay.
He also served on the board of directors for the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Riverside Foundation for Health Care, and the Sunset Psychiatric Survivors.
Bruce also helped create the STEP Centre clubhouse with the CMHA, served on the board, and later volunteered his time as their prized chef.
He also volunteered his time to help cook the Community Christmas Dinner at Knox United Church every Christmas, and brought his family to show off to everyone.
He received the Can-help Award, and also received honours from the House of Commons for his volunteerism.
Bruce loved all of God’s creatures. He also loved to fish anywhere he could go with family and friends.
He was a protective and loving husband and soulmate to his wife, Peggy. He loved children, especially his nieces and nephews.
Bruce was united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1991 to Peggy Maling-Selman, who survives along with his mother, Lorna Selman; sister, Angela (Dale) Carroll; nephew, Christopher Carroll; and niece, Jennifer Carroll.
Also surviving are his father and mother-in-law, Ernest and Ellen Maling; sister-in-law, Pamela (Michael) Higney and their children, Jennifer and William; and brother-in-law, Paul (Debbie) Maling and step-daughter, Samantha.
He was predeceased by his father, Martin Selman on June 21, 2009; his niece, Stephanie Carroll on July 2, 1998; and his sister, Elizabeth Marie Selman on Sept. 18, 1958.
A celebration of Bruce’s life will be held Friday, April 23, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Pastor David Groff officiating.
A luncheon will follow at 11 a.m. upstairs at the Legion.
The honourary pallbearers will be Terry Dolk, Wayne Selman, Darryl Gosnell, James Dobie, Hector Gaune, Dale Carroll, Christopher Carroll, and Jennifer Carroll.
