Bessie Morrison, of Rainy River, Ont., passed away Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the age of 83. She was born Aug. 15, 1924 to the late Joe Tom and Kay pay kon sheik (also known as Maggie) of Big Grassy First Nation, Ont.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Liz (Wally) Detweiler of Morson, Ont., Fred Morrison of Rainy River, Ont., Reg (Louise) Morrison of Morson, Ont., Donna Prince (Terry Morin) of Baudette, Mn., Robert Morrison of Morson, Ont., Karol (Dale) Lofgren of Baudette, Mn., Barb (Ashton) Reardon of Warroad, Mn., Joyce (Glen) Smith of Naicatchewewin First Nation, Ont., and Tim Morrison (Melvina Cheifson) of Naicatchewewin First Nation, Ont.
She also is survived by her daughter-in-law, Virginia Archie of Big Grassy First Nation, Ont.
Bessie will be sadly missed by her 30 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald in (1987); son, Donald Morrison Jr. (2007); grandchildren, Tina Archie and Glen Smith Jr.; brothers, Thomas Tom and Moses Tom; and an infant sister.
Everyone who met Bessie soon fell in love with her. She was kind, accepting of others, and always had a smile for anyone who came by. Bessie was loved and respected by many people.
She was proud of her children, and took delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bessie enjoyed reading, word search puzzles, and spending time with family and friends to sit and visit, watch a hockey game, or simply watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play.
In her earlier years, she was known as an excellent dancer when fiddle music was playing. Later, she enjoyed yelling “Bingo” from time to time.
Family and friends were received on Monday, June 16, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont.
Funeral services were held Tuesday June 17, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Bergland Hall in Bergland, Ont., with Wally Detweiler officiating.
Interment took place in the Bergland Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Bessie’s grandsons, Wally Detweiler Jr., Charles Morrison, Buck Morrison, Reil Morrison, Darren Prince, Randy Morrison, Nathan Morrison, and Ryan Detweiler.
The honourary pallbearers were Robert Handorgan, Milton Kreger, Chipper Bourre, Leonard Morrison, Patrick Tom, and Roy Tom.
