Smeeth, Bert

It is with great sadness that the family of Bertram Lawrence Smeeth announces his passing on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Bert was diagnosed with multiple myeloma eight years ago, and through treatment and determination, we were blessed with a few more good years with him.
Bert was born on May 4, 1926 in Fort Frances, Ont. to Jesse and Maude Smeeth (Carnduff).
He attended Robert Moore School and Fort Frances High School. When Bert was 18 years old he enlisted in the army and took his basic training in Winnipeg, Man.
As the war ended before he was deployed overseas he was then stationed in Petawawa, Ont. and Lethbridge, Alta.
Upon returning home, he began a 46 year career as a mechanic at Mel Newman Ltd.
Bert met the love of his life, Marjorie Ward, at a dance being held in the Point Pavilion. They were married the following spring on May 25, 1951.
They spent many happy years together with their family at the cabin on Rainy Lake and square dancing where they celebrated 50 years of membership.
Bert was also a member of Knox United Church where he held many positions and was the unofficial handyman for years.
Bert also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and family and was a long-time member of the Fort Frances Sportsmen’s Club.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jesse and Maude; in-laws, Sidney and Florence Ward; daughter, Judith Carter; sister, Mildred Bolzan; and in-laws, Bill Wilde, Roy Stromberg, Charlie Viddal, Albert (Ollie) Ward, Stan Ward, Ike Eisenhauer, Don Kerr, Charles Lawrence, Robert (Elsie) Ward, Leslie Ward, and Joan Ward.
