It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Bert Booth, 98, of Atikokan, Ont. on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010 at the Atikokan General Hospital.
Bert was born Aug. 13, 1912 in Lincolnshire, England to the late Thomas and Emma Booth.
He immigrated to Canada in 1927 and settled in Devlin, Ont., where he met and married his soulmate, Donalda McRitchie, on June 8, 1940.
He had worked at the Border mill and also had farmed in the area. He later sold his farm in 1943 and moved to Atikokan, where he began working for Paddie Harrison.
In 1944, he began work at the Steep Rock Iron Mines as a shovel and dredge operator. When the mine closed in 1974, he retired after 35 years of service.
He also had served on the Atikokan Township council for 10 years, and was a United Steel Workers of America rep. First and foremost, though, was spending time with his family.
Bert’s hobbies included woodworking, reading, playing pool, and cards. He enjoyed the time he spent at the Pioneer Centre, socializing with his good friends and participating in the programs there, including the exercise sessions..
On the top of his list was attending the “Golden Oldies” every Thursday at the Pioneer Centre.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Lynn (Ramola) of Seattle, Wash., Jim (Alice) of Fernie, B.C., Brenda (Dennis) Fredrickson of Atikokan, Ont., Murray (Louise) of Vancouver, B.C., and Donna (Alan) Mitchell of Fernie, B.C.
Also left to cherish his memory are 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; his sister, Ethel Khober of Fort Frances, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Donalda, on Oct. 2, 1997; his parents, Thomas and Emma Booth; and brothers, Edwin (Ted), Walter, John (Jack), James (Jim), Ronald, Martin, and Roland.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 7, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Riverview United Church in Atikokan, with Pastor Brad Ricci officiating.
Friends may visit prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Interment will take place in Burriss Cemetery in Burriss, Ont. at a later date.
