Bernice Grace Hazel, 68, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Man.
Bernice was born Nov. 8, 1935 in Rockglen, Sask. to the late Harry and Laura Stevens.
Bernice was very proud of all her children and grandchildren, and of all their accomplishments. She worked hard her whole life to ensure they were taken care of.
Bernice had worked as a waitress at La Place Rendez-Vous. In the last few years, she enjoyed her retirement doing the things she loved—gardening, exercising, watching her “soaps,” and spending time with her special friend, Henry.
She also became very interested in flower gardening and spent many hours creating a beautiful front yard that was admired by many.
Bernice is survived by her children, Jackie (Steve) Spuzak of Thunder Bay, Ont., Toni Newcomb of Red Deer, Alta., and Leslie (Doug) Baird and Johnnie (Teresa) Hazel, all of Fort Frances, Ont.
Also surviving are five grandchildren, Steven Spuzak, Bobbi (Shane) Armstrong, Nicke Baird, and Jessica and Taylor Hazel; two great-grandsons, Austin and Alex Armstrong; her special friend, Henry Eck; two brothers, John (Monique) Stevens and David Stevens; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Laura Stevens; and her sister, Shirley Enge.
A Service of Remembrance was held Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Knox United Church, with Rev. Marietta Marshall officiating.
The honourary pallbearers were Bernice’s grandchildren, Steven Spuzak, Bobbi Armstrong, Nicke Baird, and Jessica and Taylor Hazel.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 920 Frenette Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3N4.
